There are several people that I look up to. There is nothing wrong with admiring skill sets or the quality of someone. If you like the way they are and they make you feel good, then copy them. But in a work environment, I want to be known as a good leader and an excellent worker.
Let’s think about George Lopez. He’s a funny guy, but at work, I don’t want to be known for being the funny guy. I want to be known for getting things done.
In the IT world, your attitude and the way people see you, means a lot. There’s a lot of stress in the field and sometimes my Mr. Spock, comes in handy. If you get yelled at by a customer or by your boss, you can’t let it get to you.
Focus on the facts and don’t let your emotions get in the way.
It is not easy to do, but you must control your emotions and keep working. If you get angry and you start to yell back, you could start crying, but remember it is not going to help the situation.
Being the Go to guy can be extremely rewarding. I’m always learning new skills. The MacGyver in me is always looking for ways to make things better. Being like MacGyver or just having an attitude like MacGyver, will help your career.
One time, I applied as a volunteer to work for a company. I was just answering the phones. I saw a user that had printing problems with his computer. I decided to fix it. When all of a sudden somebody notice that I had computer skills, they ask me to fix theirs.
By the end of the week I had fixed around ten computers. After two weeks, I told them I had to leave, because I was looking for a part-time job and by the end of the day, I was offered a part-time position.
